The Rosette Nebula, also known as Caldwell 49, is a large and complex emission nebula located in the constellation Monoceros, about 5,000 light-years away from Earth. The nebula is so named for its distinctive rose-like shape, which is formed by the ionized gas and dust illuminated by the radiation from hot, young stars at the center of the nebula. The Rosette Nebula is a site of ongoing star formation, with new stars being born within its clouds of gas and dust. The nebula is a popular target for astronomers due to its size and the wealth of scientific data it can provide about the processes of star formation and evolution.
